Abstract

This article examines the socio-demographic factors underlying the series of conflicts that unfolded in the North Caucasus, Russia’s most conflict-prone region, during the 1990s. Taking into account the complex historical experience of the peoples of the Caucasus, including deportations and their subsequent return, the author locates the roots of the region’s problems in the demographic situation that had taken shape by the late Soviet period. It was marked by rapid urban development, the ethnic mosaic of settlement patterns, land disputes, and unemployment. The situation in the region was also shaped by external migration, the outflow of ethnic Russians, and intra-regional population movements.
